Kylie Minogue - Enjoy Yourself

31 years ago today Kylie Minogue entered the UK album chart at #1 with her second album, Enjoy Yourself. The album would spend 1 week on top and 33 weeks on the chart in total. Following the success of her self-titled debut album, Minogue reunited with the producers Stock Aitken Waterman, who produced and wrote nine of the album's ten tracks. The recording sessions took place in London from February until July, coinciding with Minogue filming her first feature film The Delinquents. Four singles were released from the album, including UK chart-toppers "Hand on Your Heart" and "Tears on My Pillow". Two other singles, "Wouldn't Change a Thing" and "Never Too Late" peaked in the top five. All four peaked in the top twenty in Australia and Ireland. The album was promoted further through Minogue's first and second concert tours, Disco in Dream (1989) and the Enjoy Yourself Tour (1990), which travelled to Australia, Britain and Asia. The album was re-issued in the United Kingdom for the first time in 2015, when it returned to the UK Albums Chart at number 94.

SINGLES

"Hand on Your Heart" was released as the first single on 24th April 1989. The song became Minogue's third song to debut at number two on the UK Singles Chart, before it peaked at number one the following week. On its third week it was replaced on the top of the chart by the UK Hillsborough disaster charity single "Ferry Cross the Mersey", another Stock Aitken Waterman production. "Hand on Your Heart" also topped the UK Dance and Indie charts.

Outside of the UK, the song was also successful. It reached number 4 in Australia and became Minogue's fifth top 5 single on the singles chart. It reached the top 10 in Denmark, Finland, France, Japan, and South Africa, and the top 20 in Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Sweden.

The second single "Wouldn't Change a Thing" was released in the UK on 24th July. It debuted on the chart at number 2 where it stayed for 2 weeks, being kept off the top by the Jive Bunny juggernaut, and spent 9 weeks in total on the chart selling 370,000 copies.

Elsewhere it reached the Top 10 in Australia, Denmark and Finland and Top 20 in France and Spain.

The third single, "Never Too Late" was released on 23rd October 1989. Although debuting at number seventeen due to the delayed release of the 12" single, the song became an instant hit, peaking at number four. Its low debut broke Minogue's impressive run of seven consecutive top two hits, but became her eighth consecutive top five hit single and another BPI Silver Award for sales over 200k. The track's B-side was a megamix of her songs from Kylie, titled "Kylie's Smiley Mix".

"Never Too Late" became Minogue's fifth number-one single in Ireland and reached the Top 20 in Australia, Netherlands and Spain.

"Tears on My Pillow" was released as the final single to support both the album and The Delinquents movie in which Minogue starred. First recorded by Little Anthony and the Imperials in 1958 Kylie's version was pushed until January 1990 to meet the film's release schedule. It debuted at number two in the UK on 14 January, Minogue's ninth consecutive top-five single and her fourth to debut at number two. It reached number one the following week, her fourth single to do so, staying on top for 1 week and spending 8 weeks on the chart, 5 of those within the Top 10.
"Tears On My Pillow" was also a Top 10 hit in Belgium, Finland and Ireland as well as a Top 20 in Australia, Netherlands and Spain.

Commercial performance
Enjoy Yourself debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and remained in the top 10 for sixteen weeks. It was certified double platinum by the British Phonographic Industry two days after its release, powered by pre-sales of over 600,000 copies. It went on to sell over one million copies in the first ten weeks of its release. It was the sixth best-selling album of 1989 in the UK, and was certified four times platinum on 1 January 1990.

In her native Australia, the album debuted at number fifteen before reaching number nine in the second week. It was certified platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association in January 1990 for selling over 70,000 copies.

It debuted at number sixteen in New Zealand and peaked at number six three weeks later. It was certified gold by the Recorded Music NZ in June 1990.

In Japan, Enjoy Yourself was Minogue's first top-ten entry on the Oricon Albums Chart, peaking at number seven. It was certified gold by Recording Industry Association of Japan in November 1989, her second and last certification there, and had sold 49,000 copies as of 2006.

The album also peaked in the top 30 in Finland, France, and Switzerland.
